Tradition of a family business
For more than half a century, the company GEERS Hörakustik has accompanied people on their way to good hearing. Up to now, GEERS has provided hearing systems for more than a million hearing-impaired adults, children and adolescents. In only two generations, GEERS has developed to become one of the leading enterprises in the field of hearing acoustics. Today, the specialist for hearing acoustics is one of the major companies in this sector.
The company’s history started in 1951 when Germany’s first specialist shop for hearing acoustics was opened in Dortmund. The entrepreneurial couple Käthe and Theodor Geers thus set a milestone with regard to the fitting of hearing aids. At that time, hearing systems were still being sold by travelling salesmen in inns or at the door, but the couple from Dortmund aimed at a professional consultation of the hearing-impaired, at restoring their quality of life and at raising public awareness for the topic of deafness.
Back then, the business idea was independence from vendors. While industrial companies only offered their own products on the market, the husband and wife entrepreneurs intended to provide independent consultation for the hearing-impaired. In their specialist shop, the customers should be able to choose from the complete range of available devices in order to find the optimum hearing aid, independent of the manufacturer.
In 1974, Käthe and Theodor Geers retired from the company management after more than twenty successful years and passed the baton on to their sons Volker Geers and Wolfgang Geers. In 1999, GEERS Hörakustik became a public limited company, and the two brothers Dr. Volker Geers and Dr. Wolfgang Geers retired from operations. Nowadays GEERS Hörakustik AG & Co. KG is part of AudioNova International.
The hearing-impaired still are the very focus of GEERS: activities such as, for example, interdisciplinary co-operation with health professionals and scientists or the establishment of specialized hearing centres for children improve the quality of life for the hearing-impaired.
Strong in Europe
GEERS employs about 2,000 employees and is very well represented throughout Germany. There are more than 600 specialist shops, not only in Germany, but also in Poland, Hungary, Russia and Switzerland.
